We know that it's probably magic.

This song, a song I hadn't heard since I was in grade school, came on last night while The Boyfriend was driving me home late last night, and I was so touched by it that I almost cried.

And I never get like that when it comes to music (outside of classical and opera).

ETA: I should have included the original version as well. That was stoopid. It's all fixed now!

Here are some mp3s for you to download for your listening pleasure:

MP3: Kermit - The Rainbow Connection

MP3: Sarah McLachlan - The Rainbow Connection

MP3: Willie Nelson - The Rainbow Connection

MP3: Me First and the Gimme Gimmes - The Rainbow Connection

MP3: Devin Davis - The Rainbow Connection (live)

Thanks for posting this. I, too, hadn't heard this song for the longest time! It's one of the most beautiful songs ever . . . and to think it was originally recorded by a frog.

I loved Kermit! Thanks for sharing :)

I have the straight-up Muppet Movie version, if you'd like that too!

My best friend used that song as her 'dance with dad' song at her wedding. EVERYONE was a little teared up. :)

That's one of my favorites, and my mom too. Her number one request when she got an iPod was Kermit's version.

It must be magic! I have a very special memory of this song and have been thinking about that person a lot latly. Thanks!

Great post!! I love this song & really, really weird coincidence Devin Davis is a friend of ours from Jax. My best friend used to date him!

Small world eh?!?!

Wow...I've had a really crappy week involving how depressed I've been for the last two years of my life. And I just listened to that song and had this crazy flashback of being a kid and crying when Roald Dahl and Jim Henson died. And my mom telling me that everything was ok, because we still had the stories they left us. I haven't had such a clear, sweet memory of being a kid in years. Thanks so much...sometimes I think we just need to remind ourselves of the people we used to be.

I love this song too. I have the Dixie Chick's version which is pretty darn cool. I'm off to download the versions you posted. Max loves this song, when he's upset I put it on and sing a lot and he calms right down. :)

I think of Kermit every time I hear this song....

I ♥ Rainbow Connection! It was my fave song as a kid (and, shhh, even through my punk rock teen years) and now I love to play it for my daughter. We have the Nelson version but not the Kermit, thanks!

PS My middle name is Rainbow...really.

Thank you so much for posting this. Made me cry but also made my day.

Oh! me too me too! I heart Kermit so. Sarah got the first season of the muppets show DVD and it was the greatest thing I'd ever watched. I couldn't believe how much better it was now that I'm a grown up and get all the jokes. If you haven't seen it yet you must go get it!! Right now!!

I never missed a show. I remember as a kid waiting for 7 pm to come to watch the muppets. It was such a halarious show and my favorite was Fozzie Bear.

I love Kermit and Jim Henson. His music was truly inspiring, sadly it also inspires this:

Anyhow... My favorite song is "it's not easy being green" I can't find a link to it, but there was this great version with Kermit and Ray Charles that always makes me want to cry. Kermi... we all miss you

Oh yay! I love this song! Thanks for all the links!

My baby (26 months) makes me sing this to him every night at bedtime - "sing mummy, rainbow song". I have always loved this delicate little song (particularly sung by kermie), but now it holds a whole new place in my heart as a source of comfort for my little guy. Thanks so much for the mp3 links.

Gah...I cry real tears every time I hear this song. Every time! Seems like I have lots of company.
