Bloody Mary Socks: A new sock pattern (sorta-ish)
Socks, like boats and babies, should all be dubbed with names by their owner/parent lovingly and accordingly. Even socks like you see above. They come from no formal pattern of any sort. Just your basic pair of toe-up comprised of a very easy 3x2 slipped stitch ribbing. Nothing to write home about, by any means.
But there is something about just calling these socks just "Slipped Ribbed Socks" that makes me so sad. Where the fun is that? Some would argue, 'What's in a name? That which we call a sock? By any other name would smell as sweet?' Well, I say to them a) a cute and concise name does add a wee bit to the appeal of a sock pattern (or any pattern, really) and b) "Eww, gross."
So hence, my "Bloody Mary" socks. Ah, the name brings back forth fond memories of me and some gal pals sneaking off to the bathroom during 4th grade recess and scaring the living day lights out of one another in front of the mirror. Oh, and that one time I really got wasted without meaning to at brunch. Lesson learned: sipping your drinks through straws gets you drunk *way* faster than sipping.
I finished my Sockapalooza 4 socks with time to spare. I do hope she likes them. I originally intended to send her two pairs of socks since it seemed like I was making fantastic time knitting-wise but sometime a month ago, my brain turned into pancake batter. The only things I felt up to doing were watching TV and complaining about how hot it was. It was only a few days ago I finally forced myself to pick up the needles and finish these things already! And so, here we are now.
Click on for the pattern.
(Here's the deal, I'm not feeling up to writing out a technical pattern and turning it into a pretty pdf. This sock is way too easy for someone to be holding your hand through, anyways. What I'll present to you is a recipe, a basic outline of what *I* did. Modify according to size and preferences accordingly.)
The 3x2 slipped stitch ribbing will mean 3 things: 1) it will be stretchy as hell (making sizing quite flexible) and 2) require more stitches than your normal sock pattern so don't get alarmed when you're knitting 70 stitches at one point 3) if you are dealing with yarn that tends to pool (like Lorna's Lace variegated sock yarn is notoriously known for) you might want to try this pattern out since the slipped stitches will break up the colors some. I'm not making any guarentees or anything. Just saying. . .
OK, now on to the pattern.
Ingredients:
Yarn: Two skeins of Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock yarn in "Downy"
Needles: US 1 32" circular needles
Gauge: I plead the Fifth.
Size: Size ranges from a woman's size 8 foot to any man's foot. Honest. Just anyone with average-wide feet. The narrower-footed can also knit this sock up but you'll probably only need to increase the toe until you have say 60-65 stitches instead of 70. But then you're gonna have to do some math so you can then work the heel. . .Hey, don't look at me, *I'm* not gonna do it for you.
Final measurements: Foot length -however the hell long you need it to be to fit your or recepients' foot. Foot Width- It'll fit your fat foot, I promise. It fit mine. Leg length - 7 inches or so.
Slipped St Rib (multiples of 5):
Round 1: *K1, sl 1 purlwise, K1 through the back loop, p2, repeat from * until the end of round.
Round 2: *K2, K1 through the back loop, P2, repeat from * until the end of round
Directions:
Cast on 24 stitches via Turkish Cast-On (or preferred cast on for toe ups. Magic 8, provisional, whatever floats your boat).
Increase sts for toes until you have 70 sts.
Start Slipped Stitch Ribbing pattern (only on one needle, remember). Continue with said pattern until you are two inches away from desired overall length of the foot..
Work short row heel on half the stitches. NOTE: You're going to have to either decrease or increase a stitch (whatever you want, makes no different) for the heel before you start cuz you're gonna be left dealing with an odd number of stitches otherwise. (70/2=35) So work the heel on either 34 or 36 stitches. The instep should still be at 35 stitches, tho.
After all that is said and done, continue with slipped st ribbing throughout for the leg and cuff for six inches (or one inch short of desired length)
Then work a 1x1 twisted rib cuff. (*K1 through the back, P1, repeat from * till end) for an inch.
Cast off. Repeat.

Awesome. I've been looking for a pattern for a sock swap and this is perfect because it will still fit even if it's not pref.

Love your socks. I have a hankering for red and black together. I remember once when I was a kid I had to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, I walked in the bathroom and thought of the bloody mary game. I nearly peed in my pants right then and there and couldn't sleep for a long time after that because I kept envisioning Bloody Mary floating out of the mirror coming to terrorize me...

I was told, by a fellow 4th grader, that if you go in the bathroom and turn out the lights, and flush the toilet 10 times whilst turning around and repeating "Bloody Mary," she'll reach out of the mirror and scratch your face. When I relayed this info to my mom and grandma, Grandma said, "If you flush the toilet 10 times, your mother will come in and scratch your face!"
Ah, good times.
Love the socks. And the name--so appropriate!

your ankles look hot. Thanks for not holding my hand though a ribbed sock pattern. It's nice to feel somewhat experienced at this.
