The cure for SSS?

Second Sock (and glove) Syndrome at its worst.
(Click on the pic for deets.)

Four socks and one lone glove, doomed to walk this earth alone. So sad. :( I think it's the warmer weather, but I find myself with the attention span of a gnat these days. I have absolutely no desire to finish any of these. Sigh.

The sock you see on top of the pile is a modified Jaywalker of sorts. Click here to see the stitch detail. This sock was supposed to be for my Sockapalooza pal, but the Trekking 100 didn't knit up as nicely as I had thought it would. The colors are muddled and all over the place.

So onto Sockapalooza Sock: Take #2

Broad Ripple sock in Cascade Fixation

Broad Ripple in Cascade Fixation.

Pastels (especially pastel purples) aren't my thing, and cotton yarn is depressing. So this sock isn't exactly my style. But that shouldn't matter! I mean, it's for my sock pal, a person that is *not* me.

She said she didn't care what sort of pattern, colors, or yarn I chose as long as it met the following criteria: 1) machine-washable 2) doesn't *have* to be but preferably cotton-blend and 3) no bright, loud, bright, neon-y colors. And that sock in progress you see up there fits the bill, so why am I stressing out so much and putting all this pressure on myself? I somehow convinced myself that this sock is the ugliest thing in the world and that my sock pal was going to burst into tears out of utter disappointment when she eventually received them. Just a tad dramatic, methinks.

But I wouldn't want to send my sock pal a pair of sock that I wasn't 100% satisfied with, either. To frog or not to frog? Decisions, decisions.

Well, I have had this Lorna's Laces in my stash I've been dying to cast on with for the last month or so.

Yarn for Project Spectrum June/July

Maybe I'll just finish up the one Broad Ripple sock, throw it into the pile along with the other mate-less socks (and glove) and take another stab at it with the Lorna's. . .

P.S. Check out these COMPLETED pairs of Charades I've come across. Since I have yet to finish a complete pair myself, I'd thought you might like to see what that looked like exactly.

nice laurna's!

hahah, i spelled lorna's wrong. i KNEW it looked wrong when i typed it :)

also, SSS is just one of those things.. i think that it has a lot to do with summer as well.

Posted by: gleek at June 5, 2007 10:21 PM

Yup, I have SSS too... *sigh*
That Lorna's is amazing! I've never seen that colorway.
And will ya stop the anxiety over the sock pal sock? It looks lovely even if it's not your cup of tea.

Posted by: Veronique at June 5, 2007 11:27 PM

Ah, the curse of SSS - maybe you will be overcome with the desire to have a pair of something you will be tempted back to the WIP pile? It's funny, I finished my charade socks yesterday.

Posted by: schrodinger at June 5, 2007 11:37 PM

May I just say, I've knit more pairs of socks in Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock than I care to own up to, and that is the greatest colourway I've seen. Please post a picture once you've wound it (or at the very least, once you start knitting with it), since it's always such a suprise how the colours in those hanks end up. Man, with yarn like that I wish I was your Sock pal (I'm not -- I'm with you on the whole cotton sock yarn thing).

Posted by: elizabooth at June 6, 2007 12:18 AM

I love the LL! Great color combo. I'm so glad I didn't do Sockapalooza this time around - the stress is just too much for me. I'm sure your pal will like whatever you knit for her (I'm assuming it's a her).

Posted by: Stephanie at June 6, 2007 12:20 AM

i felt the SAME way you did about the Trekking 100!!! except i ended up finishing the pair and gifting them. they aren't as awesome a color as i imagined them to be. well, what i mean is..they aren't for me. haahah

i love the other socks. ;) I still have to do a pair of your charade :)

Please let me know if you find the cure the SSS, I too suffer this disease! :) I like the sock you are working on for your pal - it does fit her criteria perfectly!

Posted by: stacey at June 6, 2007 08:03 AM

there are a bunch of people out there knitting single socks - you can get back to them in the fall when the weather induces more knitting attention...

Posted by: stacey at June 6, 2007 08:36 AM

Oooh. It's a nice pattern. I might substitute a short-row heel.

Posted by: colleen at June 6, 2007 08:53 AM

SSS - the bane of my existence! that is why I am now knitting (or attempting) two at once on circs - we'll see how that goes.

They are all kicky socks though - maybe someday you will feel like finishing...

Posted by: Sarah at June 6, 2007 08:58 AM

Okay, I don't know the antidote for SSS but apparently someone slipped it to me. I have cast on for my first 2nd sock ever! AND I think I'm going to have to make this OTHER sock I just started into a Charade sock ~ but I'm going to do it toe up and with a short row heel. Just because that worked out for me so well. Stay tuned! Oh, I have some of the Trekking 100 too ~ sad it see it isn't so wonderful.

Posted by: Katie at June 6, 2007 09:00 AM

Uh oh, sockapalooza! I better get started. Suddenly that deadline is approaching fast.

Posted by: MeBeth at June 6, 2007 12:39 PM

I think the Broad Ripple looks really pretty! But if you're going to be nursing doubts the whole time you knit, start over. Sorry about the cotton preference; that's unfortunate.
Also, me too on Sockapalooza panic...shit, I have to make knee socks!

Posted by: Katy at June 6, 2007 12:42 PM

I put my koigu socks in the washer and dryer all the time and they come out fine. You don't have to use cotton yarn!

Posted by: elizabeth at June 6, 2007 01:28 PM

Ugh, I know what you mean -- my sock pal requested both lace AND crazy variegated colors. But I think your Broadripple is pretty, if not exactly your style. :)

Posted by: pamela wynne at June 6, 2007 01:31 PM

No cure. Can't stand SSS. It is my middle name. I'm determined that my Charade Socks will be my first completed pair that I am in love with.

Posted by: Wannabe at June 6, 2007 03:34 PM

I think your broadripple looks great even if it isn't your style. I also think you are a brave soul for knitting with that fixation. I couldn't handle it myself.

As far as SSS? Um start knitting sweaters instead?

Posted by: Leah at June 6, 2007 09:06 PM

I think it looks like the beginning of a gorgeous sock. I love the colors, and they look so delicate and soft in that pattern. Good choice!

Posted by: Emma at June 6, 2007 10:10 PM

Your sockpal socks are beautiful! Don't frog 'em....please??? They sound exactly like what your pal prefers and they are very very pretty. (Would you like them if they were in a different color? If the answer is "yes" then I'd leave them be b/c that colorway looks exactly like what your pal described...)

Posted by: sb at June 6, 2007 11:29 PM

Hee, your sock pal had the exact opposite preferences as I did. I am no fan of pastels myself but it's looking very pretty so far. Good pattern choice!

Posted by: Ashley at June 6, 2007 11:29 PM

I totally love that sock pattern and the yarn you're knitting it in. I might be slightly biased since I bought that same colorway recently. (I'm sure it's somewhere in my Flickr pics!) I'm thinking I need to make those socks. That's a fantastic looking pattern.

Posted by: Teenuh at June 7, 2007 03:08 AM

I finished the Broadripples in a pink/green colourway of the Cascade and though I know what you mean about the Fixation, I find wool a bit itchy like your Pal, and the Broadripples are the best socks for comfort and foot-hugging that I've ever worn. And pretty! That's when I can wrench them off my daughter who has taken a fancy to them. I'd say finish them, your Pal will be thrilled.

is the lorna's lace black, white and red allover? very cute. i can't believe you haven't knit a full pair of your own pattern!

Posted by: carrie m at June 7, 2007 08:40 AM

I can't even let any Lorna's come through the door until I'm done with other obligations. It's just too nice and makes me drop EVERYTHING else.

Posted by: nuttnbunny at June 7, 2007 12:36 PM

Oh, keep working on the broadripple socks for your partner they look beautiful!! The LL is gorgeous too, but the broadripple socks look (to me, anyways!) just what your sock pal requested!! As for SSS-I've found the best thing for it is to cast on both socks at the same time
(no, I'm not good enough to do two at once!) but I cast on one cuff, then pick up another set of needles and cast on the second cuff, then I alternate socks, keeping them up to date with each other.

Posted by: Vanessa at June 7, 2007 12:56 PM

Hey - who says socks have to match anyway? I say you rock out the singles! Or maybe you could knit one sock in one pattern, and another in a similar pattern - but different color? Than you wouldn't get as bored by #2!

Posted by: Mary Helen at June 16, 2007 02:50 AM

Well, here's another ALMOST completed pair: http://www.flickr.com/photos/black_dog/558681663/

Lorna's Laces....is there more?

There must be an amputee that would love our single socks. How do we figure this out? What a fun cause and gesture eh?

Hi, I just stumbled upon your site looking up Claire Danes. I just really love the design of it - how did you make it? I want to get a site of my own. My friend and I are trying to pursue the comics industry in a very long road fashion. Anyways, knit on! Very inventive.

Posted by: Paul at June 22, 2007 01:39 AM

I just saw your 'pastelish purple' Broadripple sock and I think it's gorgeous. It's the first time I have seen a yarn that looks good in this pattern. I even checked out the link again to see the pattern, then I read on and realised that you aren't that fond of the choice. I felt compelled to comment that although it may not be your taste, the sock is really lovely. I'm sure you're secret sock pal will treasure it :-)
