Knitted dishcloth, you're the one! You make dishwashing time lots of fun!

A knitted dishcloth

Ballband discloth, chillin'

Pattern: Ballband Dishcloth from Mason-Dixon Knitting

Yarn: Lion Band Lion Cotton (one ball of Fuschia and one ball of Sunshine)

Needles: US 7 needles (Boye)

I went to a craft store near work looking for some Sugar 'n Cream when came across Lion Brand's Lion Cotton. It's really good stuff to knit dishcloths with. A huge array of colors and it's really absorbant and squishy. And for less than five bucks a ball you get 236 yards of the stuff. Not bad. It gets the IMBKARH seal o' approval.

So I didn't think I was a dishcloth person, either. The thought of dunking one of my handknits into a sinkful of dirty dishes made me very sad. :( However, as the Mason-Dixon gals proclaim, "A dishcloth ain't a dishcloth until it has been used on a dish. Must. Use. The. Handknits."

ballband dishcloth in action!

And let me tell you, it ain't half bad! That cloth sucks in water like you wouldn't believe and, it totally gets the job done. And look. . .

dishcloth after a job well done

. . .still in one piece! No worries.

Like seriously, dood, knit dishcloths. In nice pretty colors. They make really nice housewarming gifts and it makes washing dishes less of a chore (I actually like washing dishes, don't ask.), I promise. Do it. Do it now!

Now a totally different note, here are a few random links:

EDIT: Oh, and one more thing. . .

I love the color choise for the dish cloth. I have been thinking of making a couple myself but I wasn't sure if I would like them as much as my sponges. I guess I'll just have to try it and see

Oh & I think we need to start a petition about the brown shirts! My reaction to that was UGH! I must have it but it's my 5th!!! brown shirt from threadless!! Why do they torture us so?

I am finishing up a ballband dishcloth. So far, I love it. I am using Lily Sugar & Cream, I think and I love my color combos! I am glad they are useful, as well as cute!

I *heart* the dishcloth. I also made several, but end up using my ChoreBoy instead. Ah well!

I just recently finished my first ballband dishcloth. Aren't they fun? I think I'm going to have to copy your color scheme.

Since I am an avowed sponge-user, I took Nona's lead and made dishtowels (basically doubling the size) And they are the bomb!

looove the colours of your dishcloths! I really like that pattern too but I'm gonna have to cave and buy the book if I want to knit them :)

Note to self: must root around stash in search of cotton yarn. I don't even remember exactly what is in my stash... But there's gotta be some cotton!

Hey!!! What's with the dishcloths? First Reese, now you... weird. Must be one of those knitting trends I'm never cool enough to know about. :-P

Karissa's my friend! I always love everything she comes out with. I totally recommend buying stuff from her. Her stuff is always well-made, with lots of love and care. Completely worth it, I say. :D

I'm going to go home and figure out if I have some yarn in ye olde stach for a dishcloth, dammit, lol.

I think I'm the only person who hasn't seen the Mason Dixon book yet! I plan on picking that up soon. Are dish cloths the new knitting trend? *wink*

PS. I love rubber duckie... i used to sing this in the tub as a kid... :)

Posted by: Aimee at August 29, 2006 06:19 PM

Your dishcloth rocks. I totally want to make some, but my husband thinks we won't use them. I'm wondering if I should just make them anyway? and say tough noogies to him?

Oh, and now I've got the Rubber Duckie song in my head... :)

Oh crap! Now there's another thing I have the urge to knit - it's great that dishcloths can look so cool and funky!

Erinie is my all-time FAVORITE!!!! Thank you for putting that on your blog, Sandra, you totally just made my day.
I think I am going to have to make me some of those dishcloths when I get home--that is just too cute!

My grandmother makes all of us knitted dishcloths and wash cloths. They're da bomb!

Posted by: colleen at August 30, 2006 07:03 AM

sandra, did you see ann mentioned your blog in the snippet section of the mason dixon blog?!?

Posted by: Amanda at August 30, 2006 10:06 AM

Love the knitted dishcloth - I've been contemplating one but I too fear dunking handknits into dirty dishwater. And thanks for the info about favicons, I've always wanted one of those!

Posted by: MeBeth at August 30, 2006 01:01 PM

Ok I'm going to scream...I knew I shouldn't have watched the video..I just knew it. I'm humming the song alreay!

Love your colors for the washcloth...hmm I'm sure I have some cotton yarn someplace...

The dishcloth craze has been duly noted, and I did wonder whether it was for drying dishes or washing dishes. I'm not sure I could face seeing a handmade cloth washing dishes. :(

Posted by: Sharon at August 30, 2006 02:40 PM

The ball band dishcloth is addictive, isn't it? I feel in love the very first time I knit one. Of course, I had to consume a couple of glasses of wine before I could toss it in the soapy dishwater but once I did, it was smooth sailing.

Love your blog! :)

Posted by: Kristy at August 30, 2006 04:46 PM

love that dishcloth! i really have to buy that book. and a favicon sounds like something from outer space.

Posted by: carrie m at August 30, 2006 10:50 PM

Sandra! I miss you. Anyway, I have no idea how you did it, but now I really want to make a dishcloth. How? Really, I couldn't think of anything less interesting to knit, but now I totally want to. Spied the book in the store, read the description -- I'm sold. Gotta wait a while to buy the book though...

Cute dishcloth, but you lie! Dishes are NEVER fun! :)

hey, i was wondering if i could ask you a question... i know you knit your socks on circs but i was wondering how you do the heel flap and stuff on them.... or if you do, or take them back off the circ and put them on dpns to do that part? i'm confused. ;d

thanks.
