Embossed Leaves Socks
Pattern: "Embossed Leaves Socks" by Mona Schmidt (from the Winter 2005 issue of Interweave Knits)
Yarn: Koigu Premium Merino in umm. . .that peachy color. . .(Note to self: SAVE THOSE DAMN LABELS FOR ONCE!)
Needles: US 2 double-pointed needles (Fiddlesticks)
For: Me, I guess.
Eh. That sums up my experience knitting up this sock. Eh. Don't get me wrong, the pattern itself is fine. It's very easy to follow and the lace pattern sure is perty and all. But the socks came out too loose and, as you can see from the pictures, sag quite a bit. Negative ease is key when it come to socks. Shoving my fat feet into those big ol' chunky Mary Janes wearing baggy socks = zero fun. It doesn't feel particularly nice, believe me. I wore the socks around for a bit today and my feet were freezing. That open lace work isn't of much use when it comes to keeping in the heat.
And the color. If you follow my blog a bit, you know that I love me some bright, in-your-face sock yarn. But I decided to go a different route and used some nice peachy Koigu to knit these babies up. Or I thought it was nice peachy Koigu. It looked all pretty to me when it was twisted up in a skein at the store but once I wound it into a ball and starting knitting with it, I wasn't quite as pleased. It started to look less like a subtle "Peach" or "Salmon" and more like "Washed-Out Creamsicle" or something. Right, right?
Overall, I just found myself missing good ol' Jaywalker. Oh, how I heart thee. Speaking of which. . .
Hell yeah, I cast on for another one. And then some. :P

I wonder if tossing those koigu socks in the washer and dryer will tighten them up a bit? They are very pretty and feminine... But yeah, I see you as more "in yer face" kinda socks. The new jaywalkers look great!

I love your socks, and I've seen that color Koigu- gorgeous! I haven't yet finished mine, although I have been on a sock finishing kick. I finished one of them... does that count? I wish it did. I really like how your socks are loose- I thought maybe you meant to do it that way- they look so comfy, too. I tend to make my socks too tight and then stretch them out. I was wondering if other people did that too, and if there were any negatives to it (like ripping?). Have a great day, and don't get cold feet!

Saggy socks, not cool. But they look awesome tho! Maybe you can just use them as around the house/bed socks? Or is that a waste of Koigu?

I do like those leafy socks (as annoyingly slouchy/peachy as they may be), but you're right, you've got another great pair of jaywalkers on the way!

What! You have got serious sock fever! I love those and how they are just a bit slouchy! I think it looks cool. BUT, why don't you just run them thru the wash once so they shrinky dink up? OR just dry them and keep checking on them so they don't dissapear.
Again, you have that fashion thing where you really do make just about anything look cool mama!

I like how you tried, you really tried, to knit a pair of socks that weren't Jaywalkers. Maybe you should knit Jaywalkers exclusively from now on?
Love the picot cast on by the way!

Dude, get yourself a cool little moleskin notebook and write down details about your projects! I save my labels there too!
Your sock knitting skills are amazing!

ah, Jaywalker - yes, the best.

I actually think that the socks look good - beautiful leaves and the color is pretty. But I completely understand how disappointing it is when something doesn't fit that well. What about deliberately shrinking them? I did that recently with a pair of too-big socks and it improved them somewhat. The Jaywalkers are lookin' good!

I don't think more people could rave about koigu! I need some. I so need to find that yarn and try it.
ryc: I love that ring you got from vic. The stone is pretty freakin' cool.
